FLAIRMANIA III
NB’S Bar, Hampton, U.K.
July 18, 2004
By Robyn Closson
This competition is one of the best yet, and has one of the most creative settings for a competition, I’ve ever seen.
With Neil Garner and Neil Lowery (pictured above) two of London’s best, running and judging the competition, you know it’s going to get a little crazy.
The bar is staged in the corner of a boxing ring!
Each competitor has five minutes to pull their bottles out from their corner and step into the middle, make two drinks with Red Bull the sponsor, and show their best moves.
There were 18 competitors; six automatically make it to the finals, and five enter the Flair-off.
This is the round that will determine who out of the five will be the seventh competitor in the finals.
Each competitor, in the Flair-off has a minute to do their best moves, and win the crowds hearts.
First time around one competitor is eliminated.
The second time two are eliminated and then the last two standing battle it out for that seventh place in the finals.
The Flair-off was a close competition, but well deserving to the winner. Putting on a fantastic show and making it to the finals was Jay Detoid (pictured left).
Before the main event takes place each of the seven finalists gets 30 seconds to try and pull off their hardest move to win the Big-ass -move award.
Fresh from winning the Flair-off Jay Detoid won the Big-ass-move and was the only one to even hit what he was trying.
After a long day of practicing and competing, the seven competitors had six minutes to show their stuff in the finals.
All of them came out with yet even better performances than earlier in the day.
There were amazing performances by some of the worlds best, including Gavin Smith, Steve ‘Stretch’ Harmon (pictured left), Marco Canova, Toby Hilton and Hugh.
Taking over the room, and stealing 1st place with his energy, creativity, and originality was one of our own Las Vegas favorites, Juan Llorente from the Shadow Bar in Caesar’s Palace.
Using the ring as a prop and finishing with his trademark back flip-pour, the crowd was going nuts.
Congratulations Juan.
I would like to say a personal thank you to the boys, Neil Garner, Neil Lowery, and Toby Hilton, for being wonderful hosts for me and making my first trip to London unforgettable. Thanks,
Flair mom.
